Finding a Therapist
If you have a family doctor, start with him or her. Family doctors can often help with short term mental health issues, usually by prescribing anti-depressants.
If you want to speak to a mental health professional, the easiest way to find one is to ask your family doctor for a referral. You can also look at the list provided below. Keep in mind that some psychiatrists will ask you to get a referral from your family doctor before they will see you.
What does it cost to get help? Usually psychiatrists and physician psychotherapists are covered by OHIP, while psychologists and other therapists are not. Hospital-based programs (including CAMH) are also covered by OHIP. Other community-based programs are covered as well. When in doubt, ask.
If you have extended health care benefits, it will usually cover the services of a pyschologist, social worker, or other therapist.

Mental Health Canada
Mentalhealthcanada.com is a national comprehensive directory of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, counsellors, and psychotherapists searchable by professional designation, gender and location. Mental health professionals offer medical treatment and/or specialize in individual, couples, marital, family or group therapy.
General Practice Psychotherapy Association
GP psychotherapists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health treatment. Their web site contains an on line directory of GP psychotherapists across Canada.

You can phone them or use their on-line Referral Search Form to find a psychologist. Keep in mind that psychologists are not covered by OHIP.
The Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) You can use their web site to find a social worker. Social workers help people to find resources and to develop coping skills in their day-to-day life. If you are going through a difficult period and need more practical assistance, a SW can help. Covered by OHIP: No. Social workers in private practice are not covered by OHIP.
